DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGE
by
Charlie Barry, Technology/Product Manager
Are you aware of the new Daylight Saving Time (DST) change that will go into effect in March of this year? Have you considered the proactive steps that must be taken to ensure proper operations of your computer-based solutions? This information is intended to help guide you ensure
and peace of mind regarding this change.
In July 2005 the U.S. Energy Policy Act was passed by the U.S. Congress and was signed into U.S law in August 2005 by President George W. Bush. The act extends the daylight saving time period in the U.S. by approximately four weeks. Canada will also be observing the additional approximately four weeks of daylight saving time.
In 2007 both Canada and the U.S. will
observe the daylight saving time period starting with the second
Sunday in March (March 11, 2007) and ending the first Sunday in
November (November 4, 2007).
You may be asking yourself, “What
does this mean to me and how does it affect my computer based
solutions?” Most computer operating systems adjust for daylight
saving time automatically. Failure of the computer operating system
to adjust properly will result in incorrect time-based calculations
and storage of incorrect times relating to your Ortivus products.
Proactive measures can be taken to
ensure these problems do not occur; the measures do differ depending
on the type of computer operating system. Ortivus recommends these
proactive measures be conducted as soon as possible.
For Windows Vista Users:
For Windows Vista users there are no steps that need to be taken,
there is no problem with Windows Vista as it pertains to the change
in the Daylight Saving Time period. Note: Until compatibility
testing is completed, Ortivus does not recommend running or
installing your Ortivus products on Windows Vista.
For Windows XP SP2 and Windows
Server 2003 users:
For Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 users an update is
available from Microsoft as :
Article ID: 931836 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836)
This update currently is available through Windows Update as an
optional update, however Microsoft soon expects to reclassify the
update to high priority or critical. To verify the computer
operating system is configured properly for daylight saving time the
Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe) can be used. The Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe)
can be downloaded from the
Microsoft website.
For Windows 2000 Users (desktop
and servers):
For Windows 2000 Users there is no update available from Microsoft.
The daylight saving time must be changed manually on each computer
running the Windows 2000 operating system.
Changes can be made to the daylight
saving time setting using the Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe). The
Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe) can be downloaded from the
Microsoft website.
