Arlington Texas Fire Department Implements AVL
(Arlington, TX) Arlington, Texas Fire Department has awarded Ortivus North America (NA) the contract for providing Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) functionality for their organization. The AVL system will make use of the existing radio and server infrastructure (which includes two Ortivus NA products: AVeL-RadioGATE and AVeL-Server) already in place and utilized by American Medical Response (AMR), the Emergency Medical Service vendor with which the city of Arlington subcontracts.
AMR implemented the AVeL products for their AVL functionality two years ago, according to Arlington’s Communications Services Administrator, Gerard Eads. They currently track about 20 units with the AVL system. Arlington Fire plans to activate the AVL functionality on 50 units covering their 100-mile radius geography, which lies between Ft. Worth, Texas and Dallas, Texas. Mr. Eads states that the AVL functionality will show the location of all 50 units and assist Arlington Fire in dispatching the closest unit to the incident. Arlington Fire has already installed the hardware in all of their units and plans to have the AVL component fully functional by mid-September.
Additional benefits that the Ortivus NA AVL functionality offers is reduced radio traffic, as the units can be tracked via maps versus radio communications, as well as eliminating erroneous human judgment as to which unit may be closer to an incident. The AVL product suite from Ortivus NA is one component of their public safety software tools to improve the efficiency of operations. Other products include integrated software for 9-1-1 call-taking, dispatching, vehicular application, patient vital signs monitoring and data transmission, EMS billing and field data.
